2008

The economic recession of 2008 was one of the worst in the country’s history, with Meadville taking a huge blow as well. The tool and die industry had mostly left Meadville, due to more outsourcing and competition from foreign companies. The companies that remained slowly found ways to cope with finding new business models and new customers. In 2013, Meadville’s median household income was $29,167, which was lower than both the state and national average. Many citizens were hopeful that the tool and die industry would make a comeback. Why did we choose the year 2008? As most Americans know, 2008 was the year of one of the nation's largest recessions since the Great Depression of the 1930's. This recession impacted Meadville's economy, leaving many residents unemployed. However, Meadville artists also took a blow with the loss of performance venues. During this time, artists struggled to find places to play their music and create their media. Many bands and artists then left for Pittsburgh and Erie.
