WHO WE ARE?

This season of the Meadiaville Listening Project is a collaboration between Meadville community members and Allegheny College Communication Arts students. With the help of more than twenty community members and eighteen students, we have developed Meadville: Writing Its Own Story, which explores forces of alienation and the power of community in the rural rustbelt.

WHAT IS THE MEADIAVILLE LISTENING PROJECT?

Meadiaville is a project imagined and executed by Dr. Emily Yochim and a class of 18 Communication Arts students at Allegheny College, located in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Media Consumption 376 began meeting in January of 2018 and students were introduced to the project that Professor Yochim had envisioned. From there, the project took off. The Meadiaville Listening Project is an ethnographic exploration of life in Meadville in 2018, and seeks to tell the stories of the people who make this community go round.

WHAT IS OUR MEADIAVILLE LISTENING STORY?

In this season, we wanted to create a space where Meadville community organizers could go to share their stories and insights on a common platform. Over the course of 14 weeks we conducted interviews, created a website, produced three podcasts, published several ethnographic research analyses rooted in communication arts theory, and developed personal relationships with Meadville community members. What started out as a class turned into something very meaningful and gratifying. As a class, we were honored to continue the work of the past class and expand their research into a new season. Please check out all of the wonderful community organizers we worked with, and use this website and its content to nurture the creativity of community organizers in your area.

WHY MEADVILLE: WRITING ITS OWN STORY?

Meadville is a community that has always strived to be innovative and progressive in terms of community building and community support. While the community has struggled through recessions and depressions, the people of Meadville find continue to find common ground. Through our research it became evident that Meadville has something special going on, people from all walks of life in this community step up and get things done, together. This community will always be stronger together, and will continue to write their own story.
