Millennial Money Management

Matthew Stearns is the owner and only employee for his business, Millennial Money Management. Out of his office in Meadville, Pennsylvania, he works with cutting edge economic technology to provide clients with a diversified portfolio. As the name states, Stearns has a narrowed target clientele, focusing his attention on millennials in the area, which is very different from most money management firms. Stearns’ goals are very focused on providing Meadville youth with opportunities to be financially informed, while giving them the best chances to create successful portfolios. This can obviously play a pivotal role in the future of Meadville by instilling the youth with the tools and information that they can use as they grow up in this town. It also creates a wave of more financially stable individuals who can invest in the growth of Meadville.

Since Stearns doesn’t sell an actual product, like most businesses of the like do, he offers a service that avoids a sales pitch and other salesmen techniques that are used to lure the customer into obtaining a good. These characteristics fit in with George Monbiot’s ideas of  telling a new story that breaks away from that of neoliberalism and feeds off the ideas of intrinsic values. In his book, Out of the Wreckage, he discusses how some people and businesses demonstrate intrinsic values focusing on the sense of community and doing what they love to do, while others exhibit extrinsic values that focusing on image and money. The work of Stearns is riding the current of Monbiot’s idea of the new story because his business works on principle by providing services that have a direct impact of bettering Meadville. Through this new story, Stearns has created a sense of commonality through the love for his profession in which he can better communicate with his clients.
